Michael Miyasato, Psy.D.

I am pleased to announce the launch of my post-doctoral psychological assistantship (PSB 94022816) at The Wise Mind Institute. I am now offering individual, family, and couples therapy in Redwood City, CA under the supervision of Wes Pederson, Ph.D. (PSY 26040).

I specialize in working with teens, young adults, and their families. I have been successful in treating a wide range of issues including repairing broken and strained familial relationships, improving motivation and drive in teens and young adults, and helping guide young people to find their identity and meaning when they feel lost.

My approach to psychotherapy is rooted in acceptance and understanding. I understand that life can be difficult and, at times, we are not given the support and tools needed to navigate it. My goal is to be an effective co-pilot for my clients; sometimes teaching and offering direct guidance and other times simply accompanying them through difficult times so they aren't making their journey alone.

I have been well trained in multiculturism and am a passionate researcher of Asian Americans. I have extensive clinical and practical knowledge about working with these often over-looked and underserved populations. Specifically, I am driven to reduce the barriers Asian Americans face in receiving mental health services. I am also well versed with issues like acculturation, stigma, cultural barriers, generational differences in families, and shame/guilt.

I also have great interest in working with couples via Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). Similar to repairing familial relationships, I believe almost any romantic relationship can be repaired with the proper motivation, effort, and guidance.

Earlier this year, I received my doctorate in clinical psychology from John F. Kennedy University. I have worked in a wide range of clinical settings including community mental health clinics, schools, forensic programs, milieu, and now, private practice. I value a diverse and challenging case-load and hope my new practice can be a great resource to my colleagues and clients alike.

I am currently welcoming referrals for private pay clients. If you have any questions about my services, please do not hesitate to contact me at (510) 671-0637 or mike@thewisemindinstitute.com. Thank you.
